Queenie

It's April and that means BYP Book of the Month time!

Queenie Jenkins can't cut a break. Well, apart from the one from her long term boyfriend, Tom. That's definitely just a break though. Definitely not a break up. Then there's her boss who doesn't seem to see her and her Caribbean family who don't seem to listen (if it's not Jesus or water rates, they're not interested). She's trying to fit in two worlds that don't really understand her. It's no wonder she's struggling.

She was named to be queen of everything. So why is she finding it so hard to rule her own life?

A darkly comic and bitingly subversive take on life, love, race and family, QUEENIE will have you nodding in recognition, crying in solidarity, and rooting for this unforgettable character every step of the way.

When I first read Queenie, it was a breath of fresh air. So often black women are cast to the sidelines in romance/comedy novels (often as the sassy or wise best friend to the blonde heroine), and rarely are their coming-of-age books with a black female in the spotlight. When I came across the manuscript, I remember hearing the phrase 'Queenie is just like a black Bridget Jones' but this book is so much more. It's a story of identity, growing up, gentrification, culture, womanhood and much more. What I love most of all is that it shows black women as we are - multifaceted, complex, unique and beautiful. It's OK for us as black women to make mistakes, get things wrong, stand up for ourselves, and be imperfect. We're up against so many struggles in society that just navigating the world day-to-day should be seen as an achievement within itself. Queenie is the epitome of the anti-heroine and I look forward to reading about more brilliant black women who are upsetting the status quo.
