Hi guys,This week I'm going to be tackling a tricky topic!
I want to talk about speaking up. I visited The University of Manchester, and I was asked a question. A student explained that they were receiving daily microaggressions and they didn't know how to deal with it. I advised this student to speak with the person in order to take control of the situation. I suggested taking the microaggresser into a corner and explaining that their behaviour, whether that's something as little as snidy comments or big as touching their hair. By nipping it in the bud early, that helps to limit in-built anger or frustration that will effect your working environment.
It's something that I live by myself. When I visited 10 Downing Street this week, I spoke to a recruiter for the parole board (a board which is made up of over 260 people, non of whom are black). He tried to explain that it was an unbiased process and it was based on 'merit'. We know this isn't true, so I challenged him. I grilled him with questions, I asked him about the application process, and I explained to him that it wasn't a fair process in terms of opening it to a diverse pool of candidates. Just know when it's next open I'll be sharing it with the network!
Addressing issues isn't easy, but we have to do it. It's all about asking the hard questions. Speak up and speak out, whether it's for yourself or for others. That's the only way we can and will progress. And remember, people should treat you how you should wish to be treated!
