Finding Your Own Opportunities
Many of you may have watched the BBC video on viral sensation, Reggie Nelson last week. Didn't catch it? If you missed out, the video captured the story of Reggie, a young boy from East London who went knocking on the doors of those living in Chelsea to find out how they'd acquired their wealth.
One day, a door opened. Fast forward a few months and Reggie was offered a mentorship by Quintin Price, the Head of Alpha Strategies at BlackRock. Since then, he gained an internship at BlackRock, graduated from Kingston University and is now helping other young black professionals break into the finance sector whilst he works at a new firm in the corporate sector.
Reggie's story is incredibly inspirational, but what lingered with me was the way he took his future into his own hands by thinking outside the box. To then share his story in order to inspire others to action was very powerful. I wonder how many of us have similar stories to share? Ultimately, through finding his own opportunities he is now opening the doors for other like-minded professionals in need of a leg-up.
When I started BYP, I'd recognised the need for it purely by looking around my corporate surroundings and noting the lack of diversity. With BYP, I believed this would allow for young black professionals to network and connect with each other, build strong relationships, create opportunities for mentorship, and most of all, create a space in which young black professionals could meet future leaders.
In less than a year, BYP has grown to over 7000 members, is in 65 countries and has a reach of over 20, 000 on social media. Sometimes, life is about finding opportunities, and making the most of these when you find them, which brings me to our upcoming Diversity Recruitment Fair. With brands such as HomeAway, Spotify, Sky and many more attending, as well as Reggie himself, who knows what opportunities you could find for yourself!
Hoping to see you there!
